Sydney Symphony play “Little Chrissietina”

Sydney Symphony Contemporary Music Festival 2005

The “bright young stars” of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra Fellowship programme will be performing Little Chrissietina’s Magic Fantasy (2 violin version) in a concert as part of their Contemporary Music Festival 2005.

More details are available at the above link, but the concert is on Sunday 10 July 2005 at 7pm, in the Verbrugghen Hall, Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

Also performed in this very interesting festival are Messiaen’s From the Canyons to the Stars and the premiere of a new piano concerto by Michael Smetanin, with soloist Lisa Moore.

  1. I attended the concert and also listened its broadcast from ABC classical fm, a sparking and witty piece, its distinctive style and taste is an amazement. I pretty enjoed the drastic rhythm and intensity( as the title indicated, magic fantasy).Concepts of contemporary music is mysterious, i did prepare my possible frown before the concert, but not for your piece, Matthew. In certain extent, except witnessing composers’ narcissism and grotesqueness, i wonder what we might expect from a contemporary music concert for an audience without being “well-educated”. Probably contemporary music does not have to show its rebellious features to distinguish itself from an old and alredy-well -established tradition, or basically please let it not scare some people who might potentially become its enthusiasts. It takes me several years to start listening contemporary music, ( i can not say i am well-educated in classical way, neither), and i have to say it is not an easy feeling. The reason why i listen contemporary music is because i am fascinated by the exploration for the music(though frown is unavoidable) and this process opens our minds and enriches our understanding for both music and ourselves. I appreciate this festival and by frowning, confusion, contemplation and rejoicing, i do learn a lot. Many thanks for your music and best wishes!

NB: this comment was written at 1am, and maybe i was raving at that moment!!!!
